The following is some food for thought as we consider poverty policies in the US.

The right to "earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation," was proposed in the second Bill of Rights in 1944. It was incorporated into the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 which stated, "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care."  Although adopted by 160 countries, it is unratified by the US (Holden, 2019). Therefore, the US is not required to protect these rights.
