Compare the economics of wind to PV for KSU: do an economic analysis of A: a 1.3MW PV system installed on the top deck of the Union parking garage (use available on-line sources for system parts costs); and B: a 1.5MW GE wind turbine installed in the pasture about 2 km north of campus (mean wind speed @ 50m=7-7.5m/s). Use $1200/MW for turbine installation cost and $125,000 per km transmission line cost. Use inflation=2.4%, discount rate =4.2%, and electricity cost of $0.07 (KSU gets a large-volume discount.) Include reasonable values for maintenance and assume a 20-year life. Probably the effective cost of electricity will make a more convincing case than net present cost.
