Assignment: Training Effectiveness
Attaining safety excellence relies on management executing their Organizing Function (remember from Module 1) by having the appropriate workers in place with the required abilities, education, and training necessary to suitably accomplish job tasks and functions. Training is essential to ensuring management's responsibility for hazard identification and risk reduction. In addition, management must ensure that all employees understand the policies, procedures, and safe work practices to minimize risks. Training, lack of training, or inadequate training can play a role in employees engaging in at-risk behaviors and, consequently, in mishap prevention.
In OSHA's publication in the resources of this module, two methods for prioritizing training requirements are examined. The first method is to detect employees who are at higher levels of risk. The risk can be affected by conditions under which the work is done, such as the inclusion of noise, heat or cold, or safety or other health hazards in the immediate area.
The second method of detecting employees at elevated levels of risk is to study the history of accidents and injuries. Analysis of historical accident reports can identify specific jobs or tasks with common hazard/risk characteristics. As a result, employees engaged in those jobs or tasks will benefit from more focused training; in addition, company/organization-wide training needs are likely to be recognized.
For this assignment, present a training plan to reduce highway automobile accidents within the fleet of company automobiles. Briefly describe the steps you need to take to complete the needs analysis, including any supporting data. Estimate the costs of development and implementation of the training plan, and explain how you plan to measure the effectiveness of the training, both short-term and long-term.
