Problem: An 88-year-old patient with a history of depression is prescribed a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). What should the PMHNP consider when prescribing and monitoring this medication in the geriatric population? (CO1,2) A Geriatric patients may require higher initial doses of SSRIs. Bolder adults are less likely to experience serotonin syndrome. Monitor for r potential side effects, such as hyponatremia hyponatremia and bleeding risk. SSRI medications have limited efficacy in the geriatric population.
