By now you must have developed a feeling that plants are organised to function optimally under a set of environmental conditions. This is to say that each plant can perform well only within a limited range of variations with respect to a certain environmental factors. However, what is optimal for one species may not be optimal for another.
Deviations from any one of these conditions substantially away from optimal, causes stress and initiate an adaptive response of the organism. Obviously, the nature of response would correspond to the particular stress condition deviating from optimal. A considerable amount of research effort has been put into understanding the plant responses to specific stress conditions. This promises to suggest how man could probably overcome the losses caused by stress.
