Problem:
The Maintenance Manager of a large textile industry has decided to conduct the in-depth risk assessment for all maintenance works performed in the factory. It must be noted that basic maintenance works in factory is done by the in-house maintenance team comprising of six persons. The company employs outside contractors for most building repairs, electrical works and general cleaning. The main job of maintenance Manager is to support production by for example maintaining plant, equipment, machinery and undertaking minor jobs on building fabric. The maintenance manager’s job also comprises the selection of contractors and the management of contractor’s activities. As a safety and health officer you have been asked to advise and aid the Maintenance Manager in this risk assessment exercise.
Required:
Question 1: Illustrate out the factors which should be considered throughout the planning phase of risk assessment.
Question 2: Determine five (5) major hazards which the maintenance personnel and contractor’s employees are likely to be exposed. For each hazard describe how workers might be harmed and provide the control measures which must be implemented to diminish the risks to an acceptable level.
