Please write a coherent, closely argued essay of at least seven pages in length (typed in a 10-12 point font, double-spaced, with one inch margins on all sides), which responds to one of the following topics. Note that a title page and lists of works cited will not be included/count towards the seven required pages.

Make certain your paper has a thesis–that is, an arguable theory, insight, or statement that in general terms answers one of the questions posed below. The opening paragraph of your paper should state your thesis, the body of your paper should prove your thesis, and the concluding paragraph should tie together your proof and show its implications. In all cases, remember to support your claims with specific examples–close reading/explication.

You are required to conduct research and to incorporate a minimum of two outside scholarly sources into this essay. Wikipedia (online encyclopedias) do not qualify as academic sources. One of your sources may be a scholarly essay distributed by the instructor and discussed in class this semester. When you quote outside sources, be sure to cite those references accurately according to MLA guidelines. A failing grade is the consequence of plagiarism.

Select ONE of the following novels—Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula, or The Island of Dr. Moreau—and perform a detailed analysis of one or two sets of characters that may be seen as “doubles” of one another. First identify the characteristics and/or incidents that connect them; then explain the reasons for or the effects of this doubling. Assuming that the author intended for the characters to be viewed as doubles, why do you think he does this? Does the doubling of characters lead to a kind of deconstructive reading? Is the author performing a social commentary?
