Do not simply state what happens in the dance, instead give examples to support your observations based on the choreographic elements of space, time and energy that you read about in Chapter 2.
Talk about things like the direction, changes in levels, focus, points on the stage, phrases and transitions, speed & tempo of the dancers performance, underlying beat of the music, use of stillness in the dance, what about the use of energy (never high or low…..was it suspended, sustained, percussive, vibratory, swinging?).
Example: “The dancer showed suspended energy and stillness when she stood on one leg while balancing.”
Example: “The dancer moved in a circular direction while she was jumping showing high level around the stage.”
Also describe the physical elements of the performance such as stage environment, background, sets, props, lighting, clothing, footwear and style(s) of dancing and music used in the performance.
Be as concise as possible. 1 paragraph for the style of dance (ballet, modern dance, jazz dance tap, etc.), music (orchestral, lyrical, gospel, etc. & type of choreography (narrative, thematic or abstract), 1 paragraph for the physical characteristics and 3 total paragraphs (1 each) for the choreographic characteristics of space (1), time (1), and energy (1). You do not need and introductory or concluding paragraph. Your opinion (unlike the live concert critique) does not matter!
Do not spend time on your personal impression of the performance For example, your opinion of the dance or dancers isn’t important.
Be sure to write in complete sentences and paragraph form. Do not underline, italicize, bold print or otherwise highlight your critique!
