Personally, I find the ideas of Nietzsche and Freud to some of the most fascinating to come out of the modern era. They are so important because they are really asking questions about man's fundamental nature, and the answers they come up with challenge not only the Enlightenment, but also the Christian tradition. Here are few questions to start the discussion this week: Choose any one or two of the quotations from Nietzsche's "The Gay Science" and tell us why you chose them and what you think about them. Is he right/wrong? Do you agree/disagree with his assertions? Do you personally agree with the Enlightenment viewpoint on Progress and Reason or the Freudian view of man being primarily irrational and driven by impulse? Which worldview, Enlightenment or Modernist, do you think has had more impact on our society in the present day? Use specific examples to make your case.
