Performance for measurement of impulse voltages

Question 1: Describe various capacitances, potential dividers and compare their performance for measurement of impulse voltages?

Question 2:

a) Describe one method of controlled tripping of impulse generator.

b) A 12-stage impulse generator has 0.126 µF condensers. The wave front and wave tail resistances connected are 800 ohms and 5000 ohms correspondingly. If the load condenser is 1000 pF, find out the front and tail times of the impulse wave produced.

Question 3: What do you mean by cascaded Transformer? Describe why cascading is done? Explain with a neat diagram a three stage cascaded Transformer.

Question 4:

a) Derive an expression of Ripple voltage of a multistage Cockroft-Walton circuit.

b) A ten stage Cockroft-Walton circuit has all capacitors of 0.06pf. The secondary voltage of the supply transformer is 100 kV at frequency of 150 Hz. If the load current is 1 mA, find:

i) The optimum number of stages for maximum output voltage.
ii) The maximum output voltage.
