1. Role play. You are a slave living in the South. Given the opportunity, what would you do to resist the authority of your plantation master? Would you accept your life for what it is, or attempt to gain your freedom (in whatever way you see fit)? Use stories about the life of slaves to explain your thought and/or actions.
2. The majority of southern whites owned no slaves, yet slavery was central to southern culture. Explain how and why slavery was so important to southern culture. Consider the social and economic aspects of life in the South when you answer this question.
3. People in favor of slavery argued several different reasons for it to continue, including historical, biblical, economic, and legal reasons. After researching the subject, explain which reason you consider most effective at the time and describe its viewpoint.
4. After reading the chapter, do some additional reading about a specific person, place or event related to the chapter. Tell us about the topic you chose to research for this chapter: why you chose it, what you learned, and why it is important. You can post this as text, a PowerPoint, or other format. You can link to a short YouTube video clip then explain why you chose your topic and what you learned. This is your opportunity to go beyond the text and teach the class.
