Patient experiencing severe pain due to a terminal diagnosis

Assignment Task:

Discuss how you would use the data collected by your colleague to guide the next step in the planned change process or to inform future work with clients.

During my fieldwork at Richmond County Hospice, I worked with a patient experiencing severe pain due to a terminal diagnosis, requiring frequent visits to the inpatient unit for pain management. This patient struggled with feelings of helplessness and despair, which appeared to overshadow their ability to cope with their illness.

The presenting problem can be summarized as the patient's chronic pain and emotional distress related to their terminal diagnosis. To promote resiliency, I would implement a mindfulness-based intervention that encourages the patient to focus on present experiences and manage pain through medications and breathing exercise and I would include guided imagery. This would help to promote a sense of control and emotional regulation during a time when a patient feels that they are stripped of their autonomy. Need Assignment Help?

An appropriate instrument from Smith-Osborne and Whitehill Bolton's article for evaluating the effectiveness of this intervention would be the Resilience Scale for Adults. I selected the Resilience Scale for Adults because it is designed to assess various dimensions of resilience, including personal competence and social support, which are relevant to the patient's experience(Smith- Osborne & Bolton). And the Resilience Scale for Adults is feasible to administer due to its straightforward format, taking only about 15-20 minutes to complete, and it is suitable for adults. In a hospice setting time is of the essence there are many cases when patient's enter hospice care and pass away 24 to 48 hours. During this short amount of time patient's can have an altered mental status that makes it difficult to answer complex questions. The ability to evaluate quickly and utilize a straightforward format allows for the patient to be quickly and effectively evaluated is crucial to the hospice setting.
