INTRODUCTION

The title of this week's discussion lends itself from the fabled ability anyone in entertainment needs of being "Good in a room".

Today, more than ever, this skill is integral to success. You may have made every professional connection in the world socially... but if you can't nail the pitch, they stay social contacts.

A colleague at MGM, Stephanie Palmer, saw this need as not only being important in entertainment, but in every business. And based on years of working within those "rooms", Stephanie wrote the book on it: Good in a Room That book led to a consulting/speaker business of her own where she has shown how this particular Hollywood skill is beneficial everywhere.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Wow me in a minute. Gaining entry to "the room" may be Herculean in nature and make you feel like you've made it. Not so fast. You got the executive's attention outside the room. But to them, time is money. And they don't earn the big bucks by wasting either. They've given you one minute to "Wow" them enough to retain their attention beyond those sixty seconds.

For this discussion post, you will need to post a one minute video pitching your company's Distribution and Marketing Plan to the creative team behind the media project. It's your minute to "sell" them on your company being the right producers to partner with.

2. Preparation is everything. Knowing all of this, how are you going to make the most of this brief time? With so much built around a single minute pitch, preparation is your best weapon. You've seen the Oscars. Time's up on their thank you speeches and the band plays them off whether they're done or not. Executives are far less forgiving. Just like the best speeches, success is in the preparation. Sun Tzu stated in The Art of War: "Before doing battle, one calculates in the temple and will win, because many calculations were made; before doing battle, one calculates in the temple but will lose, because few calculations were made."

Outline the main points you need to hit. Don't try to hit too many or they may get cut off. Beyond grade reductions if your video goes over a minute, the viewer (myself and clients) will shut the video off at the one minute mark, no matter what.

After outlining your key points, write out your script. Rehearse it. Revise it after rehearsals. Repeat. It's the process that leads to the best productions. Don't slight your one minute pitch in comparison to major companies. Every work is as important as you make it.

3. Lights! Camera! Action! When ready, record your one minute audio and video pitch that's ready to wow us. You can create your pitch using any program you would like (ie: Keynote)

The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
