One unfortunate tendency in the debates over capital

One unfortunate tendency in the debates over capital punishment and abortion is the inclination to vilify those who hold an opposing point of view. Why do we sometimes vilify those who hold views that differ from our own on significant ethical matters and what can be done to eliminate this response to dissent?
