One of the most interesting side effects of digital reproduction of copyrighted material (music and movies for the most part) is the consumer's ability to sample works. The movie studios fought hard to prevent the widespread use of VCRs -- and now CD releases are one of their most profitable lines. Conversely, music acts now find that a best-selling CD isn't the money-maker it used to be and that touring is the way to make money. What about books?
