Nonverbal Communication: Recognizing Functions Most of us use nonverbal cues and react to them unconsciously. We seldom think about the functions they serve.
Task. To become more aware of the functions of nonverbal communication, keep a log for one week. Observe how nonverbal communication is used by friends, family, instructors, coworkers, managers, politicians, newsmakers, businesses, and others. For each of the five functions of nonverbal communication identified in this chapter, list examples illustrating that function.
For example, under "To reinforce and accentuate," you might list a friend who whispers a message to you, thus suggesting that it is a secret. Under "To control and regulate," you might list the steady gaze of your instructor who has targeted a student not paying attention. Train yourself to become more observant, and begin making notes in your log.
How many examples can you name for each of the five functions? Be prepared to submit your list or discuss it in class.
