Nursing theory defines the profession and guides practice by providing a knowledge base and standards to follow. Nursing theorist observe the needs of the patients, nurses and profession as a whole and then create a framework to follow that will help solve this issues as well as predict the outcomes. A critical problem for many hospitals and other nursing facilities is creating a healthy work environment. Nurse leaders must be aware of the dynamics of a healthy work environment. Nurse face a high risk for burn out as hospitals face high turnover rates both will result in less than ideal outcomes for patients (Blake, Leach, Robbins, Pike & Needleman, 2013). Applying Jean Watson's theory of human caring will foster a healthy work environment for nurses. In order to apply this theory, it first must be defined as well as what exactly is a healthy work environment. Supporting literature will also be discussed. Interpretation of the theory will be discussed as well as the steps of building the desired work environment.
