The term nitrogen fixation refers to the oxidation or reduction of atmospheric nitrogen to nitrates (NO-3) and ammonia (NH3) which can be used by living organisms. In nature nitrogen fixation into these compounds occurs primarily in two ways:

  • Biological fixation
