HVAC Systems Assignment - Architectural and Building
Part 1 -
You are required to provide a description of one of the central air conditioning systems.
The report will include:
- a description of an air handling system from an air inlet though the AHU to an air outlet, including a sketch drawing of this system. listing its elements and their functions;
- information on how heating and cooling are provided to the AHU;
- a brief description of boilers and chillers in HVAC systems;
- information on how heat rejection from the chillers and packaged air conditioners are accomplished;
- a sketch of an air handling plant highlighting its features;
- identification of builder's work associated with HVAC systems.
The report shall be written in Standard Format Report in accordance with subject Engineering and The Community NEF1103 and shall be from 6 to 10 pages (approx. 1200 words). Photographs and relevant materials sourced from references are encouraged and should be placed in appendices. Suggested initial resources:
1. Wang, SK., 2000, Handbook of air conditioning and refrigeration, McGraw-Hill;
2. ASHRAE, 2008 (or later edition), Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems and equipment handbook
3. AIRAH, DA08, application manual HVAC & R an Introduction
Part 2 -
You are involved in the design of an air conditioning system for a house for a builder. The builder has 5 house design plans. Refer the attached sheets for the design/plan and the respective cooling load for each house. Each group required to work on one house as per attached plan.
You need to provide information on:
a. types of air conditioning units suitable for domestic use (e.g. evaporative type, reverse cycle single split or multi split type systems, wall mounted / ducted type / ceiling cassette type fan coil units, etc.);
b. the advantages and disadvantages of each type;
c. selection criteria and parameters;
d. Find the retail cost of the equipment (system), and determine the approximately cost ($) per kW cooling capacity for each type;
e. and then provide a schematic design of a system for the house utilising information from trade catalogues.
As part of the design, you will need to provide a justification for your final selection of system type. In addition, you are required to perform the following tasks:
f. Discuss means of reducing the nominated cooling capacity specified above applicable to an existing house;
g. Assuming that you have a reverse cycle unit, how much would it cost to run the unit serving the lounge/family/living room for 5 hrs in both cooling modes? (consider standard internal and ambient air temperatures listed in manufacturer's catalogue);
h. From your selected air conditioning system for the Lounge/Living room, calculate the cooling capacities for the two conditions given below (from the tech data provided) and compare with the nominal capacity of the unit.
i. Determine the COP of the AC unit at two conditions:
- When the room air temperature is required to be 24°C DB/ 17°C WB at standard design ambient conditions (35°CDB); and
- When the outside air temperature reaches 40°CDB with the room air temperature remaining at 24oC DB/ 17oC WB.
