Problem: Many Americans like to believe that the United States is a great nation built on noble principles. Others would argue that the treatment of Native Americans (among other things) proves that the United States has never lived up to the principles it claims to have been built upon. In other words, we are a society of phonies and hypocrites, no better than any other conqueror of foreign peoples. To what extent (if any) do you think our nation's treatment of Native Americans throughout history has tarnished the image of the United States?
