Inspection & Preparation of Routine and Condition

Monitoring Plan for a Centrifugal Pump Set-up

Aim and objectives of Overall Condition Monitoring of a centrifugal

Set-up

Aim:

The aim of this activity is to conduct actual inspection of centrifugal pump set-up in the laboratory and prepare routine and condition monitoring plan.

Objectives:
- To conduct actual inspection of the centrifugal pump set-up in the laboratory
- To determine critical and non-critical components of centrifugal pump-motor set-up
- To prepare routine and condition monitoring plan to be implemented for the centrifugal pump set-up

Theoretical background

A centrifugal pump driven by a three phase, 440 volts induction motor converts the water from low pressure side to high pressure side of the system. The pump converts driver energy into kinetic energy by centrifugal action or accelerating the water to the outer rim of the pump's impeller. Major parts of the system are the centrifugal pump itself, electrical motor, variable frequency drives VFD and control panel, supply and delivery tanks, pressure gages, flow valves and flowmeter Centrifugal pumps

3.0 APPARATUS, SET UP & PROCEDURE:

3.1 Apparatus
- Centrifugal set-up with the following components;
Supply tank, Delivery tank, 440V, 3 Phase induction motor, Variable Frequency Drive VFD, Control Panel, Electrical Socket, Flow meter, Valves, Pressure gages

3.2 Procedure
- Consider the centrifugal-pump set-up in the laboratory
- Identify all the components of the centrifugal pump systems.
- Assess the system components and evaluate the required maintenance
strategy to be implemented.
- For the components that needs condition monitoring, specify the condition monitoring techniques to be applied.
- Based on some literatures, determine the periodicity of the maintenance activity,
tools to use, criteria of diagnosis, and responsible person.
