How to Write Economic Essay?
Your essay should have at least five written paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: Introduction
This is where you will identify economic issue/problem, formulate your economic assumptions (your research hypothesis), the relation of this hypothesis to ECO2023 course materials, and overview the content of your essay. Example 1: The hypothesis: Bitcoin bubble could burst at any moment with devastating results for the US economy. The problem: over the course of 2017 Bitcoin rose from $800 per coin to over $18,000, which leads many to believe that the Bitcoin is the next big asset bubble.
Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph One: Exploring Hypothesis
This is where you include information taken from various sources to develop a comprehensive analysis. You will synthesize your strongest argument or the most obvious point. For example, you could compare several definitions of a financial bubble and describe Minsky's five stages of bubble activity. Your argument could be that Bitcoin shows all the characteristics of financial bubble ready to burst.
Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph Two: Explaining Economic Problem
This should be a follow-up to the first paragraph and include the second most valid argument. You will analyze your own and others' economic assumptions and explain your findings in terms of your assumptions. For example, you could explain the correlation between asset bubble and recessions. You could analyze several historical examples of recessions (for instance, Japanese economy in 1992 and credit crunch of 2000-2008 in the US economy) that show the damage done to the economy by the bursting of asset bubbles and compare it with a current situation in Bitcoin market.
Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph Three: Analyzing and Synthesizing New Ideas or Policies
This is where you will introduce a more unique argument, a new idea or a new policy. This is your attempt to analyze and explain your findings in terms of assumptions. You will carefullyevaluate the relevance of contexts before presenting a point of view about new policy actions and behaviors that could be contributed to the economic problem. For example, you could attempt to synthesize several steps that investors could take to avoid the Bitcoin bubble.
Paragraph 5: The Conclusion
Your conclusion paragraph should mirror your introduction. Restate your economic assumptions and evaluate your arguments with an overview of the essay. You will conclude your essay with one final observation that defines your assumptions. For example, you could conclude that the bursting of the Bitcoin bubble is not a question "if", but "when".
