Misunderstandings due to being from different cultures

Project conflict resolution:

Evaluate how well the two cultures interacted. How could they have interacted more effectively?

What method of conflict resolution was used? Provide an example.

Were there any misunderstandings due to being from different cultures? Describe them. If no misunderstandings took place, then describe typical reasons for intercultural misunderstandings.

Was the conflict resolved? If so, describe how. If not, describe what you think is the best resolution for the conflict and why.

Intercultural Conflict Resolution:

This is what I collected from the Bloods and the Lone Wolves:

Lisa: the conflict that we are dealing with is that the bus trip is to a outreach program. The bloods are playing loud music, and irritating the lone wolf. He asks them to turn the music down, and the bloods begin to pick on him. Continuing from that I think that the lone wolf becomes scared. The bloods see how scared he is, and begin to take his backpack. This outburst from the bloods become dangerous for the driver as well as he may not be able to concentrate on his driving, and does not have a place to pull over to handle the situation.

Katy: Personally to me I feel people of the lone wolf culture would be more aggravated and annoyed then scared. I feel if thi? f4 the case the lone wolf would actually stick up for himself and fight back if not just ignore the annoyance of the bloods.

Dustin: I do not necessarily agree with you Kathryn, I truly believe that the stereotypical “Lone Wolf” is used to going with the flow and is against making himself known.  Being invisible is the best way for them to feel as then they are not being bothered or bothering anyone else.  I really think that if the Bloods started playing their music loud and are getting out of hand, that the lone wolf would do everything in his power to just ignore the situation and not show it or the individuals involved any attention at all.  I truly feel that by doing this the Lone wolf is continuing to stay low key and out of sight out of mind to everyone on the bus.

Katy: (to Dustin) Normaly if nothing was done physically I would agree with you. We do like keeping to ourselves but keep in mind that there just because they are loners doesnt mean we wont fight back when pushed. However if you want to take my pack back, I’ll ignore you for a bit ask for it back and then fight back to get back what is rightfully mine and just because a person is in a gang means nothing to some one thats a lone wolf. We fight for our right to be left alone.

Dustin: (to Katy) As the Blood Gang leader, I really could care less if you try to fight back for your backpack or not.  The fact that you have even tried to step to me and act bad, just makes me even more upset.  You realize all I have to do is give the command and every blood on that bus will be on you before you can think straight?

Luis: Hi Kathryn I totally agree with you on this one. I think that the lone wolf would be just as you described, aggressive towards the bloods. I find that a lone wolf can be a unpredictable person and have tricks up his sleeves. Sticking up for himself is definitely a starter but whatever our team decides to go with is fine.

Maria: I agree that a lone wolf would get irritated with so much going on that he would start to freak out and lash out at people.

Lisa: Kathryn, I will have to disagree with you. I think that a lone wolf likes to keep to themselves. They do not normally like to go out of their comfort zone. The comfort zone for them is to left alone. With that said I feel that this person would more likely not draw attention to them self.

David V.: So the Bloods continue to take the Lone Wolves’ backpack. The Lone Wolves remains calm as they pull on his back pack, assessing the situation. His fellow Loners are getting ready for a possible fight, The Bloods are already to start fighting. Then the lone wolf calls out the Blood who pulled on his backpack and challenges him to fight one on one. He ask the blood to “put it on The Blood” that none of the other Bloods will jump in. One on One fight to prove how down he is. The Blood agrees and they all ask the driver to pull off to the road to a parking lot. He agrees as he recognizes that he can somewhat control the situation by being able to call the police when he stops. They all get off the bus and the two start to fight.

Lisa: I think that before they can get pulled off the road, and on to a parking lot one of the other lone wolfs hears what is going on. This lone wolf is sitting behind the driver, and the driver asked him if he has a phone. The bus driver then tell him to call 911 and explain what is going on, and have the police at the location that they are going to stop at. Doing this will put a stop to the fight.

Matthew: Do you think the loner will start conflict or just go with being himself? I think most loners would just be themselves and some would try and start a fight that most likely they wouldn’t win but they would show people that they wouldn’t back down without a fight. If I was the loner, i would go along with my business because i am not the person that creates conflict. That’s just me. Do you think it would end up being a one on one fight? I think many people would jump in just because.

Katy: Matthew, i completely agree with you. I myself am a loner/introvert so I would just keep to myself. Unless physically provoked by an outside force. Lone Wolves while they stick to themselves I feel would back up another one of their own if a fight broke out so if it came to that I think there’d be multiple fights if it came down to that.

David V.: Matthew, I could see it with the loner just going about his business, but for the drama’s sake, this loner is tired of being picked on. He feels that is there is no option but to stand up for himself to stop the bullying.

Maria: I think your story is very possible and like that you stated that they take his backpack therefore that means the lone wolf has to get involve. I think that the solution to this conflict might be that law enforcement gets involved by a phone call from the bus driver.

Magda: As the bus driver pulls to the side of the road. The blood reconsidered before taking a blow at the lone wolf face, he accomplished to just scared him and laugh at his face. The bus driver manages to remember his childhood as a lone wolf and being bullied by other. He bus driver intimidates the bloods when asking them to return the backpack, and demanding to keep silence in his bus. When the lone wolf see the blood a bit intimidated by the bus driver, he then rushes to snatch his backpack back, and with a firm soft voice says, “Don’t you ever do that again”.  The bloods agreed to keep calm and behave. The bus driver decide to re-arrange the sitting in the bus, there was no need to call the police. Placing the bloods in the front of the bus and placing the lone wolves in the other half of the bus. Ultimately the lone wolves and the bloods were heading different directions. As the bloods stop came first, some bloods laughed by exiting the bus, and others had a guilty look on their faces. The bus driver continue the road with the lone wolves to the lone wolves next stop. The bus driver said, “Let’s practice to fight back without violence, but never let anyone step over you”.

Jenn: As much as I like this idea of the bus driver being the hero and settling things down, I know for a fact that the Bloods have no fear and would not let a bus driver take over control.  The Bloods got their reputation from not having fear in anything.

Dustin: I agree with Jennifer, I do not think everyone understands the severity of the situation or the bond/brotherhood between the bloods.  All it would literally take is one command from the highest ranking blood on the bus, and it doesn’t matter who is there or not.  If the command is kill then people will die….I’m just saying that although I feel the loner may have the ability to stand up for himself, I do not think that anyone would be able to stand up against someone who is not scared to lose it all, and willing to go down swinging just to prove a point.

Matthew: I would say the bus is going on a tour of the city where the bloods and the lone wolves would most likely get off at different stops. If they were to get off the same stop, the conflict might would continue. I have been on a bus or train where there were gang members and i am pretty much a lone wolf and the way i look at is, as long as they don’t start something with me, i would continue to be myself. If they were to start something, i would pretty much do what they want because i have seen so many things where innocent people end up hurt or dead. It is not always due to gang crime as it is always from conflict it seems.

India: I will assume the role as one of the Blood gang members and I sit by and not say anything as my group members taunt the lone wolf. Even though the lone wolf is quiet and he likes to stay in his comfort zone, he is getting very irritated with the disrespect. The bus driver eventually pulls the bus over to attempt to settle the bullying, but he is afraid of the gang, plus he doesn’t want the gang members to gang up on him. The bus driver finally decides to call the police in order to protect himself and the lone wolf.

Jenn: The Bloods have no fear, so the bus driver intimidating the bloods will not work, if anything that would cause another conflict.  Also, the lone wolf, I think would want to keep to themselves unless they are pushed too far and forced to get involved.  I think the resolution would be the bus driver recognizes the conflict and the bloods and is aware of their reputation and would contact the police.  What about weapons? Bloods are known for having guns and knives with them at all times to protect themselves.  These need to be included.  How would the lone wolf react when a weapon is involved?

Maria: I agree that most blood are fearless and that the bus driver intimidating the blood won’t do much in fact i think the bus driver would be intimidated by them. I do think that many of the lone wolfs are very paranoid, and therefor they would not be unprotected either.

India: Jenn, since they are all going to the youth center it can be assumed that the Bloods are stripped of their weapons, therefore they just use physical force with the lone wolf.
