Mechanical Design Project - XYZ CHEMICAL COMPANY CENTRIFUGAL PUMP DESIGN
Background
You are a rotating machinery engineer for XYZ Chemical Company. It is your responsibility to design and specify rotating machines, such as pumps, compressors, steam turbines and gearboxes, to be used in all types of chemical processes. One such process is that of cooling water circulation. Cooling water is required to remove heat from all sorts of equipment on a chemical unit.
Your job is to:
Recommend a pump design for this system. Make assumptions where appropriate but explain and defend your assumptions. At a minimum your design should include:
1. The shaft material, diameters, d1, d2, d3, the lengths, a, b, c and any shaft shoulder details.
2. The key and keyway materials and dimensions for the pump shaft.
3. The ball bearings at points C and D.
4. The mechanical seal rotating ring radii, R1, R2 and Rb.
5. The mechanical seal stationary ring radii, R3, R4.
6. The pump housing inner radius, R.
7. The springs for loading the rotating ring in the seal including the number of springs, the wire diameter, the free length, the number of turns, the pitch, the end types, the wire material, the spring constant and the required spring deflection such that the mechanical seal will work properly. Be sure to report the range of your face contact pressure, Pf, over the operating range of the pump.
Arrange these quantities in a table, with all quantities clearly marked, including units. To help you get started, I have included a list of many of the parameters required for the problem on the following page. You are to build on this list, giving as much detail about your design as you see fit. (The more info I have the easier it will be for me to track down any errors and award you extra credit.) You are to arrange all of this information into five tables. These tables may be part of your computer program or separate. In either case, the table must have three columns: 1) description of quantity, 2) variable and 3) value (including units). Your units must be inches, lbs, and seconds!
