Maintenance of Concrete Roads:
The main defects that show up in a concrete road are :
(a) cracks
(b) loss of sealant
(c) spalling at joints
(d) loss of texture
Fine cracks can be filled up by pouring bituminous emulsions or joint sealing compounds. If the cracks are wide, they can be cut to a full or partial depth and made good by epoxy concrete.
Loss of sealant can be due to oxidization and hardening. This takes place after 5-7 years. The sealant has then to be replaced.
Minor spalling at joints can be repaired by epoxy concrete.
Loss of texture makes the concrete pavement smooth, slippery and skid-prone. Texture can be restored by diamond grooving machines.
