Maintenance of Bridges and Culverts:
Careful inspection of bridges and culverts at periodic intervals can detect cracks, foundation settlement, scour, malfunction of bearings, silting and choking of waterway. Steel bridges require to be repainted at regular intervals. Broken parapets and railings need to be repaired. The growth of shrubs and vegetation blocking the passage of water should be cleared.
Maintenance of Traffic Control Devices
Traffic signs need to be painted at regular intervals. Broken posts should be replaced. The road markings need to be repainted if they have worn out or if the surface has been renewed.
Maintenance of Shoulders
Earthen shoulders at the sides of a pavement should be graded frequently so as to ensure that they are not above the pavement level and blocking the flow of surface run-off. Any growth of vegetation hindering the free flow of surface water should similarly be cut.
