Magnesium -
It is available in most of the plants, especially vegetables.
By its deficiency diarrhoea is caused.
Its important functions are -
(a) Along with calcium salts, magnesium is a component of bones and teeth.
(b) It is present in plant pigment chlorophyll that takes part in photosynthesis.
(c) Magnesium occurs in the middle lamella or cementing layer of plant cells.
(d) Along with calcium it is essential for working of muscle cells.
(e) It is an activator of enzymes connected with fat metabolism and transfer of phosphate.
(f) Participate in ATP cycle.
(g) To maintain sol gel stage.
(h) To bind 2 sub units of ribosomes.
(i) To bind m-RNA to small unit of ribosome in translation.
