Literature review covering recent RCT evaluations of relevant interventions
Background: Misinformation is jeopardizing electoral processes around the world and raising concerns about democratic backsliding and political violence. Due to the proliferation of social media, policymakers, educators, and others are increasingly worried about digital literacy among younger generations. In this project, we seek to identify innovative, evidence-based policy interventions designed to boost digital literacy among children and adolescents. We will review and evaluate existing programs in the area of digital literacy, extract relevant insights and recommendations, and design an original large-scale research proposal to test efficacy of different interventions in realistic contexts (e.g., schools, online). We are particularly interested in adapting interventions from the drug and substance abuse context, which have recently been tested through randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and similar approaches. We will identify best practices stemming from these evaluations of programs such as "Unplugged" and "Big Brother / Big Sister" (among others). We will then evaluate the suitability of these and similar interventions for adoption into the digital literacy context. We are particularly interested in testing interventions that can be implemented or disseminated in real-world settings, such as schools, news outlets, social media, and elsewhere.
