Leadership and management may be words that are used interchangeably, but they are two distinct roles in the work place. In the dictionary the definition ofleadershipis-
1) the office or position of a leader
2) capacity to lead
3) the act or an instance of leading.
On the other hand, management -
1) the act or art of managing: the conducting or supervising of something (such as a Business)
2) judicious use of means to accomplish an end
3) the collective body of those who manage or direct an enterprise (Merriam-Webster.com, n.d.). By these definition, we can clearly see that leadership and management are not the same but are often interchanged when spoken of.
In this week's lecture article and resources the word leadership and leaders were described as having an impact on people by means of being collaborative with team members, inspiring, motivating, admired by their followers, having the ability to recognize and build upon an individual's ability, effective communication, role models, and it is said that leadership begins with an individual who is motivated and self-aware (O'Neil, 2013).
Huber, 2014, describes management/managers being focused on systems and structures, task accomplishment, concerned with managing the resources of an organization, can be equated with command and control, authoritative. In the book by Huber, Leadership and Nursing Care Managementpage 5, it states "the demands of management work are increasing in amount, scope, complexity, and intensity and thus increase role stress and leaves less time to plan and focus on unit management."
Some overlap would be in directing activities, it can also overlap in situation specific issues, management may be described as a "special kind" of leadership. The overlap occurs where two processes are integrated or synthesized to accomplish goals and where the same strategies are employed even though the goals may differ (Huber, 2014, P. 3).
As a leader, It would be easy to take advantage in this overlap to create change, a leader can use a team approach with their followers, as well as motivation and collaboration to create an atmosphere of positive attitude, which in turn will most likely increase productivity, which may achieve a goal for the benefit of the organization as most managers are usually focused on.
