Lab: "Determination of us"
Objective: To determine the coefficient of static friction, mms
Introduction: The static coefficient of friction, mms can be easily determined by tilting a ramp and noting the angle at which the mass begins to move. The relationship is:
mms = TAN qqc
where qqc is the critical angle for the mass to just begin to move. The amount of mass does not enter into the equation.
Procedure: Place a flat bottomed object on the ramp set initially at zero degrees. Slowly raise the angle of the ramp until the object that you are testing just begins to move. Here, at this point, record the critical angle. Repeat this ten times for the same object.
Objects to officially test:
1. Teflon on steel
2. wood on steel
3. brass cube on steel
4. aluminum cube on steel
5. lead cube on steel
6. rubber stopper on cube
