There are three key components to community-oriented policing. The first is community partnerships. This is when the community and law enforcement work together to increase trust in the police. The community will play a role in prioritizing and addressing public safety issues. Police departments can partner with other agencies to provide resources to the community. For example, the police can work with the local schools having a partnership with them to provide a positive view on law enforcement. The police can work with probation and parole officers to help and allow the parolee to see the officers as helping not just in the community to take them to jail. The community is a valuable resource to help with issues and together law enforcement and the community can produce solutions to improve public safety.
Organizational transformation is the second component. The alignment of organizational management, structure, personnel, and information to support community partnerships and problem solving (Eck & Maguire, 2010).
Problem solving is the third component. Simply put the community policing involves being proactive to the problem rather than reactive. Together they must come up with solutions of public safety problems. By using a method known as S.A.R.A. Scanning, analysis, response, and assessment. The community and the police work together to identify the problem. Analysis to understand the problem and the cause and effect and find out as much as possible. Response this involves developing and implementing strategies to address the problem (Eck & Maguire, 2010). Assessment determines whether the response was successful. If there were some part of the plan that worked but others that can be changed.
