"As the fourth-largest group in the Maghreb, the Kurds are now a major factor in the region's political instability. Large movements of Kurdish people across Iran, Iraq and Turkey is intensifying the level of destabilisation in the region resulting in splinter ethnic arrangements, human rights, treatment of minorities, democracy and ethnic separatism. Kurdish self-identity is defined by religion, language, customs, social obligations and customary laws. They oppose federalism and remain a thorn in the foot of larger Islamic states in the Maghreb" ("Reflections on the Kurds" Gunter, Darden and Henshaw, 2016-2019).

Mohannad Al-Kati examined how "Kurdish discourse occurs within the Arab World through the lens of the discourse of the Kurdish movement in Syria. This group was selected due to its organic relationship with the other Kurdish movements in the region  and because it is heavily influenced by the discourse of the Kurdish movements of neighbouring countries, particularly Iraq. He provides a comprehensive guide to the various Kurdish parties and divisions. In his analysis of Kurdish discourse, he focuses mainly on the demands and perceptions of the Kurdish issue in Syria throughout various periods of the history of the movement" ("The Kurdish Movement in the Arab World: The Syrian Kurds as a Case Study" Mohannad Al-Kati, 2019).

The issue continues to exist at the margins and occasionally erupts in the broadcast and print media. The question of whether they are "terrorists or freedom fighters" is at the centre of this perennial debate. In early 2019, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said the ISIS group's five-year "caliphate" was over after the militants' defeat in Syria. On the same note, the world is cautious and has pledged to remain vigilant against ISIS.
