Joint Details and Preparations
Joints shall be prepared by machining, flame cutting with grinding to bright metal or air-carbon arc gouging with grinding to bright metal such that surfaces to be welded are free of irregularities as well as any oxide or other contaminants as may impair weld quality.
Air-carbon arc gouged surfaces shall be cleaned. All traces of contamination and extraneous matter shall be removed and examined for cracks by magnetic particle or liquid penetrant methods.
Weld preparation shall be in accordance with the Fabricator's approved welding procedures.
The surfaces to be welded shall be free from dirt, grease, scale, paint, grit or any other foreign material which may adversely affect the final weld quality, for a distance of at least 51 mm (2") from the welding edge.
The thickness of non-beveled plate or pipe to be welded shall not exceed 3.2 mm (1/8") unless the joint is back gouged or ground and double welded.
