It is desired to design a system to keep a 1-million-galon capacity water tank filled. The plan is to use a centrifugal pump to fill the tank with chilly water (10 oC) ground water from an aquifer, which is 0.8 mi away from the tank and 150 ft lower than the tank. Estimated daily water use is 1.5 million gal/day. Filling time should not exceed 8 hr per day. The piping system should have four butterfly valves, ten 45oelbows and galvanized-iron pipe of a size to be selected in the design. The design should be economical both in capital and running cost expenses. Your design task is to select an economical pipe size and thickness and show which of the following solution will be more economical
a) One pumping system is used at the beginning of the pipeline
b) Two pumping systems are used. One at the beginning of the pipeline and the other in middle distance.
Note that the cost of installing each pumping system is $20,000, the initial cost of the pump is $50per each horse power (hp) and the operating cost of pumps is $10/hp.
You are required to write a report showing detailed calculations and graphs of HGL and TEL. The total piping and components cost should be obtained from the available manufactures in the market.
Notes for Students
The grades will be distributed as follow:
25% on the Presentation
60% Technical Content and Details of the Analysis
15% Planning and Cost analysis
Additional 25% extra marks on the neatness and extended effort
Project Objectives
1. To familiarize the student with the practical aspects involved in designing fluid systems
2. Prepare young engineers through hands on experience in writing project technical report to execute tasks related to design practical fluid system.
