It has been argued that distribution of an arbitrary gust velocity is exponential and hence a rapid convergence to the Type I asymptotic distribution of the maximum gust velocity in a thunderstorm should be expected. Press [1949] has verified this experimentally and has observed the extreme gusts in many (nearly 500) similar thunderstorms. He found a mean extreme gust of 15.6 ft/sec and a standard deviation of 6.2 ft/sec. Find the parameters of the Type I distribution and the probability that the maximum gust velocity in such a storm will exceed 60 mph.
