Issues facing disadvantaged or marginalized populations

Goals and Objectives:

The goal is to examine the legal issues facing disadvantaged or marginalized populations and how these are reported in the news media. The ways in which the media depicts legal issues will shape public perceptions of these issues and populations. It is often what is missing or silent in the reporting that says a great deal about justice.

This assignment provides students with an opportunity to observe a particular form of media in Canada (daily or weekly newspapers, magazines, journals), making a critical appraisal of how legal issues are depicted in newspapers, particularly with respect to certain populations. You will want to ensure that you have chosen an article which will enable you to take up the questions highlighted in Part B.  You will be expected to use the same article for Part A and Part B of this assignment.
