Environmental health issues associated with water quality and availability can be caused by a number of natural and human-made chemicals. Factories dumping waste products can cause widespread contamination of lakes and rivers. Groundwater can be contaminated by agricultural use of insecticides and even naturally occurring elements like arsenic and radon. Water can be treated with sometimes controversial, purposeful additives such as chlorine and fluoride. Collectively, there are many contributors to poor water quality.
For this week's Discussion, select an area of water quality that is of interest to you. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, waterborne infectious disease, chemical contamination of ground or surface water, water scarcity, water standards, water treatment, etc.
After researching your topic, respond to the following by Day 4:
•Describe the problem and its significance.
•Describe prevention and control measures.
•Discuss barriers to reducing or eliminating the problem, including the cultural or global impact. The barrier can be specific to your community, state, or nation, or it can be global.
•Be sure and use specific statistics and references in your answer.
Support your discussion by citing at least one primary research article
