Following a recent night-time helicopter crash, the air ambulance service in Ontario is considering night-vision goggles for all pilots. One measure of the effectiveness of these goggles is the resolution, in lp/mm (line pairs per millimeter). A random sample of 18 ATN PVS7-CGT high-performance night-vision goggles was obtained and the resolution was measured for each. The sample variance was s2 = 5.230.
a. Is there any evidence to suggest that the standard deviation in the resolution for these goggles is different from 2? Assume normality and use a = 0.01.
b. Find bounds on the p value associated with this hypothesis test.
