Is health care a right or a privilege? For this debate, I am taking the position of health care as a right.
In 2008, President Barack Obama declared health care as a right of every American despite a time of millions uninsured Americans struggling. (Maruthappu et al., 2013). The World Health Organization, the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights all stated that everyone has the right to health care. Individual leaders and world organizations break down their declaration of health care as a right into definitions of health care, access, standards, and the concept of health. Still, it is a right, health care is a right.
The U.S. health care system is based on social criteria, and most Americans believe it is the best health care in the world (Nickitas et al., 2020). Private insurance, employer insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare are the different health care delivery systems available to us. You have the right to enroll in insurance programs or self-pay for health care. Any choice gives you the right to health care at any age, with any disease or disability anywhere.
Having the best health care system in the world, Americans have the right to health care. They have the right to see a medical professional to treat and prevent infection, disease or disability. The inability to pay for services does not limit the access to health care as it is a right for all of us. Through the years our leaders and government organizations have proclaimed that health care is a right.
