Sociology in Practice #1: Family depictions in film and television.
For this assignment I would like you to review a television show or film of your choosing as a platform to discuss how families are presented in within the media. As you examine the television show or film, I'd like to read the connections you are making to the material covered in class thus far. If you're not sure you may consider the following to write about (these are suggestions):
Family in a historical context: If the media is set in the past you may want to explore if it is historically accurate, or if it is more aligned to families of today.
The structure of the family: Discuss the family depicted and the roles of the members. E.g., is it "traditional" or does it challenge role expectations? Explain.
Family Dynamics: Interactions, roles and expectations. Norms that people observe or deviate from.
Is the depiction of the family in the film rooted in the realities in the family? Consider the problems or dynamics of the family portrayed. Does it represent a "real" family? Whether it does or doesn't explain why.
