Assignment
Medical Information System - Investigation of Booking System and SNOMED CT
Your assignment is to investigate two aspects of how an Internet-based self-service booking system as the one described above can be created. The booking system is aimed to handle all kinds of non-acute physician appointments in the healthcare system. For each appointment, the booking system also collects the reason for encounter and history of present illness as medical background information to the appointment. For appointments that need a referral, the booking system also checks that there is an appropriate referral for the appointment before the appointment is booked.
The first aspect to investigate is how it is appropriate to organize the medical background information about reason for encounter and history of present illness in the booking system.
The second aspect to investigate is which benefits there are to use SNOMED CT as a reference terminology and ontology in the booking system compared to not using any reference terminology and ontology at all. Consider both the cases when checking for appropriate referrals and for collecting the medical background information.
Hints
It is important that you focus your investigation on the two aspects explicitly stated in the assignment. A general investigation of how a booking service might work is not relevant for the essay.
Make sure that your (appropriate) assumptions is explicitly stated in the essay. Assume that all citizens are able to use modern Internet-based self-service systems.4
Entity-Relationship diagrams (ER diagrams) and similar are seldom relevant to include in essays.
User interface design is not part of the course's learning outcomes, so user interface design investigations are not relevant for the essay.
Consult the expected learning outcomes of the course as a guide to finding key aspects in this endeavor. However, security (as in protection of privacy and confidentiality) and legal aspects should be excluded. Also remember that the assumed target reader is a fellow student with no knowledge of medical informatics.
