Introduction to Transportation Engineering:
Transportation is the movement of goods and people from one place to another. Transportation Engineering is that branch of engineering which deals with the application of engineering principles to obtain speedy, safe, economical and efficient movement of people and goods. Transportation covers three elements:
(a) Vehicles in which people and goods are transported,
(b) Paths over which the vehicles move, and
(c) Terminals where people and goods are received and dispatched.
Civil engineers are concerned with the design and maintenance of items (b) and (c) above, whereas the vehicles given in item (a) above and their movement fall under the domain of mechanical and electrical engineers.
Transportation is a vital activity in a society affecting its overall economy, trade, administration and defence.
