Intrepretation is an important factor is controlling the quality of the product on economic levels. Sometimes for want of proper decision, projects are being held up for considerable period. During certain occasions as a compromise the manufacturers may agree to remove inconsequent defects.
There is no guarantee that a repair weld produces a more sound joint than the first one. The significance of each defect influences the decision. An inspector shall be capable of distinguishing the type of defects correctly. Sometimes, it is essential to have reference radiographs, reference blocks, etc., to intrepret defects correctly. It is essential to have good metallurgical background and practical experience to give correct judgement about the acceptance of unimportant defects. It's the experience of fabricators that there is a difference of opinion between inspectors and inspecting agencies. To improve the decision making ability of an inspector, it is essential to have training and education along with experience. Not only that they should have training on test equipment and methods but also on interpretation of defects. An inspector should have the end use of product in mind while taking a decision to reject or rework a weld.
