Assignment task: A Reflective Journal is a good tool for self-examination and to explore your personal experiences of working with culturally diverse clients and co-workers. Journal entries will be kept confidential and will not be shared or judged on content. The purpose of the assessment is to encourage you to reflect and to understand how they could impact on your work.
Example Journal Entry:
I tried to teach a client how to make a cup of coffee. This client was a lot younger than me and did not want to listen to me when I was instructing him. He said "you don't know what you are doing". This affected me personally as I took it as an insult and as a personal attack but I did not show this to the client. When I continued to show the client the steps of how to make a cup of coffee, he started watching and followed the steps. One week later the client disclosed to me that he had never been taught how to make his own coffee and that was why he made those comments (discussed earlier). I realised that the client had not meant his comments as a personal attack; the comments may have come from him not feeling confident in making a cup of coffee.
