Instrumentality theory of motivation


Problem1. According to instrumentality theory of motivation, money is the major motivating factor at work. This can describe the existence of performance related pay in many organisations today. However, the instrumentality theory has been criticised on various grounds. Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, elucidate how far money is the main motivating factor at work.

Problem2. An organization has decided to purchase many computers in order to improve performance in an organization. Given that there are various brands and alternatives on market, the manager has to make a decision among the different brands. In addition, the manager has some budgetary constraints. Describe how the manager can use the rational decision making process in order to identify the best decision for organization in this specific situation.
