National Interests and Elements of Power
At the national (or strategic) level, Homeland Security strategy addresses the direction all components, at the strategic, operational and tactical level work towards in securing the continental United States, our territories and commonwealth. Specifically the Homeland Security Strategy must focus on specific risks which include threats, vulnerabilities and consequences to our vital interests.
A nation has a variety of types of power that it can employ in order to protect and advance its' interests in pursuit of a secure homeland. These are considered the "Elements of National Power". When combined, these elements can be formidable.
Review the resources listed in the Books and Resources area below to prepare for this week's assignment(s). In a paper, categorize and rank the elements of national power with regard to their importance to homeland security. In your analysis,
- Include specific examples of how the Elements of Power interact together to promote national security.
- Analyze what would happen if an element was weak or nonexistent.
- Assess how the elements of national power conflict with each other.
Support your paper with a minimum of five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.
Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages
Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic.
