In this homework, you are required to design reinforcement for bending and check shear (and design stirrups) for a typical beam in the East-West (E-W) direction in a floor system in an office building as shown in the figure.
Beam sizes are all given on the figure. The floor has 5 bays in N-S direction and 3 in E-W direction. The live load is 50 psf, superimposed dead load is 45 psf . Only the DL and LL combination will be used in design.
Materials are: fy=60,000 and f'c=4,000 psi. For the stirrups, use fy=40,000 psi.
a) Design flexural reinforcement for the beam.
b) Design shear reinforcement for the beam. Use short formula for shear design.
Note
For structural analysis purposes, assume a 3-span continuous beam with fixed supports at the ends (i.e., restrained). So you can use the ACIrecommended equations for the positive and negative moments. Also note that in this case the beam height indicated is the overall depth h (which includes the slab thickness).
