Essay - Do the Benefits of Fracking Outweigh the Risks?
Purpose: In this essay assignment, you will decide, based on your judgment and credible research, whether the benefits of "fracking" outweigh the risks. This decision will be framed as an Evaluative Essay.
In the alternative, you may write an Evaluative Essay on a different topic, by submitting a proposal to me on the due date of the Rough Draft. Stay tuned for more details!
There are three key parts to an evaluative essay:
1. The judgment, or your overall opinion
2. The criteria, or reasons why you've made your opinion
3. And last, evidence to support it
So, how do we put these three elements to work to make an evaluative essay that says more than 'Because I said so'? Basically, you will want to include four main components: your introduction, some background information, your criteria, your evidence to support your evaluation (which includes your sources) and your conclusion.
Format:
- Font must be 12 pt. Times New Roman
- Margins must 1 inch all the way around
- All material from outside sources (direct quotations, paraphrases, etc.) MUST be cited properly using MLA guidelines. Remember that if you don't credit the original source, you have committed plagiarism.
- The essay should be no less than 3 pages, but no longer than 4
- Also, since this is a research class, the essay MUST include 3 sources
Sources:
- You are required to quote a minimum of three (3) sources in this paper
- Since it is the third essay, only one source may come from your book or D2L, and at least two (2) sources that must come from your own research, not the book or D2L
- In addition to the 3-4 pages of essay, you must also include a Works Cited page that lists your sources, in the current MLA style
- Plus, all In-Text Citations must be in the current MLA Style
