In the "Returning Soldiers" document on p. 735, Dubois lists four grievances regading the treatment of African-Americans by the United States:
"It lynches: and lynching is barbarism of a degree of contemptible nastiness." (Foner: 735)
- What is Dubois saying about lynching? What does he mean by barbarism? How does this relate to the events we have discussed throughout the course? How does it relate to groups other than African-Americans (women, Indians, immigrants, working people, etc.)?
The other three accusations made by Dubois are: It disfranchises, encourages ignorance, insults us
Again, what does he mean by this, and how can you apply these transgression by the United States to other groups (Indians, women, workers, immigrants, LGBT, etc.)
