Micro-Project -Eggxotic
Project Brief
In teams of 4 or 5, Design and build a prototype system that will deliver a hard-boiled egg unbroken to a target. You can do this any way you can! (Safely.)
Rules (few of them):
1. The target zone is ?400 mm and lies behind a ?1600 mm flimsy wall in a ?2000 mm area marked with tape on a concrete or vinyl floor (the ‘DMZ'). Your egg must be delivered (unbroken) to the target zone (closer to the centre = more marks)
2. You may only operate your device from within the ?800 mm (all people in the team operating or helping must be within the safe zone). You may not step in to the DMZ or walk around it or step out of the safe zone. Your egg must start its journey from within the safety zone.
3. The main part of your device may travel through and/or over the DMZ and may touch the floor and wall in the DMZ as much as it needs to. (remembering that the wall is flimsy and will be made of a single thickness of corrugated cardboard)
4. You may place and/or operate a second device within the DMZ or outside the DMZ within 1000 mm of the edge of the DMZ.
Your designmust:
• Be safe in operation
• Deliver the egg from the safety zone to the target zone within 2 minutes
• Becheaptomanufacture - scrounge whatever you can, but we'll have wood, tape, string, cardboard, robotic components, toy wheels, etc. for you to use
• Take no more than 2 minutes to set up
• Take no more than 2 minutes to break down and remove
• Notdamagethefloor, DMZ wall or surrounds
• Not make a mess that your team cannot clean up in 2 minutes.
You could imagine all sorts of scenarios where a product like this would be needed to remotely handle an object. Such an example might be in defusing a land mine (not that these are allowed by conventions of war any longer), or in working in aggressive environments (chemical plants, nuclear reactors, underwater, in space, etc.). You will build a Prototype (a mock-up) of a product (the thing you'd sell).
Tasks
You are required to design, make and test your egg-delivery system. The requirements are as follows:
1. You wil work in pre-allocated groups.
2. The designisyours (asagroup) becreative.
3. You must prepare and submit a group wiki on the Learning @Griffithsite for the course (the wikis hould contain the following items use this as a checklist):
• A user need stable.
• A user requirements specification (with each item numbered).
• a design input specification (with each user requirement tracked and each item numbered).
• Concepts ketches-with in teresting features annotated.
• An engineering drawing of the product.
• A bill of materials (BOM) of the product.
• A Pugh's decision matrix to show how you selected the best concept.
• Photo sand video which capture the ‘Implement' and ‘Operate' activities + analysis of outcomes.
• An advertising web page for the product.
• Team structure and responsibilities identifying who did what.
• Other details as you decide which best show your team and project in its best light (e.g. meeting notes, more general discussions about team structure, progress on the project, etc.).
4. You must manufacture a prototype of your group's agreed design-its hould function just like there a lthing. And look good enough to have been bought from a shop (but you only have scrap mterials and off-cuts available to you and hand tools).
5. You must show your prototype in action-use it to deliver the egg.
